Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia

Look at this cutie! Meet Kate – a 2-year-old, mixed breed dog that was rescued by her dedicated owner. Kate came to us in March of 2013 due to collapse and anemia. After exam and blood work was completed she was diagnosed with immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). This is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks and destroys its own red blood cells. Kate received 2 blood transfusions and was treated with several medications to help suppress the immune system. Over the course of many follow up visits and blood work, Kate’s values improved and normalized. We are happy to report that the IMHA is in remission. And Kate is back to requesting belly rubs – especially from her favorite person, Dr. Balog!
